2014 Year in (P)review Part ∅ - Most Anticipated

With our month by month 2013 year in review in the rearview mirror, it's time to start looking ahead from the year that was to the year that will be.  There are a number of great bands with projects looming on the horizon, so many in fact that this Most Anticipated list will be broken down into three parts, here's a first look (in alphabetical order) at what has me starry eyed and titilated with excitement ...

Incredible cover artwork by Vance Kelly.
BLACK CAPRICORN - Just today Black Capricorn announced they will have a new album out in 2014, their third, titled 'Cult of Black Friars'.  It will be released by Stone Stallion Rex, who are currently busy selecting a vinyl friendly 40 minutes worth of doom from the 9 songs and one hour's worth of material the Italian trio has submitted to the label.  No release dates have come to light, but if I was a betting man I would imagine a second quarter release would be prudent.  Black Capricorn's second album, 'Born Under the Capricorn' was released in March of last year but is picking up momentum as time goes on and more and more people are beginning to hear the record for the first time and catching on to how great it is [read my review here].  'Born Under the Capricorn' has made numerous end of year lists and deservedly so.

Cover artwork by Dan Bell (not final artwork).
BLIZARO - 'Cornucopia Della Morte' is not necessarily confirmed for a 2014 release date, but you've got to figure it's about due to come out.  Far as I know the tracking for this album was completed many moons ago and has been in the some state of post-production for some time now.  With the recent release of the band's two-disc demos collection titled 'Strange Doorways' I am pacified for now, but excitement is also building and it's officially listed on the Razorback Records homepage as an upcoming release so I should just stop being a total spazz about it and just wait for the awesomeness to come pouring down my earholes like some unnameable thing that slithers in darkness. (Note: I'm wearing a Blizaro shirt as I type this.)  For more about Blizaro go here or here.

BLOOD FARMERS - This long dormant band's one and only (so far) self-titled 1995 album is my white whale.  I can't find it anywhere.  I need to hear this thing so if you would like to or are able to sell me a copy, please get in touch with me.  Anyway, Blood Farmers were one of the first doom bands I discovered (via youtube) when I was new to the genre and I wrote the name down in my little notebook of bands to check out, it remains one of the few that don't have a check mark beside it.  Then, in June of this year, the band premiered a brand new video on The Obelisk website.  It was the title track off a forthcoming album called 'Headless Eyes'.  The album has yet to be released and with no official facebook page or anything like that it's hard to get info or updates on the album.  So no release date at this point, but let's just draw a red circle around the year 2014 on our calendars as a target date.

CARDINALS FOLLY - Much like Blizaro, this Finnish traditional doom trio released a demos / rarities compilation in preparation for their next album called 'Our Cult Continues'.  It's a technique that seems to work.  I hadn't got around to hearing Cardinals Folly for myself until I was given a review copy of the demos comp. 'Strange Conflicts of the Past' for The Sludgelord website.  It got me hooked.  The title track of the forthcoming disc was released on the band's bandcamp page in late October and as part of the latest Doommantia compilation (download it here).  Album artwork and release dates have not been confirmed at this point but what is confirmed by the title song is that the band continues to power walk through a doomed wasteland.  There is enough power and energy behind the band to stay warm in the frozen wastes of their own doomed compositions.

Excellent Conan band artwork done (as always) by Tony Roberts.
CONAN - This one actually does have a release date and in fact, I've already pre-ordered it from the Napalm Records webstore.  'Blood Eagle' will batter cowards on a shore of long bones come February 28.  The album will contain six tracks with at least one "Gravity Chasm" having already been featured on the Paranoid Hour of Power in live form.  This Liverpool trio is one of my favorite doom bands and there are none heavier.  The band will be conducting a reasonably thorough tour of the UK in mid to late March 2014 before embarking on a European tour for most of April 2014 hitting Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Finland and Sweden along the way.  Meanwhile to those who will have picked up the album by then, gravity chasms will be opening in the centers of skulls everywhere and imploding them in a spray of gore.

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY - This one is unconfirmed and there is no word on what if any type of releases the legendary North Carolina band has in store but they recently entered the studio and European tour dates await in the month of March.  Mike Dean the band's bass guitar and vocal dynamo is still touring with Vista Chino but hasn't officially joined the band full-time and there's been no word on whether C.O.C. have finished recording in the studio so if they haven't they will have to work around his busy schedule.  If that's the case we might not expect a new album or E.P. from that band until 2015 or late 2014.  Either way, I'll be looking forward to a new album from the original trio line-up of Corrosion of Conformity, their self-titled full-length was my album of the year in 2012 and The Megalodon E.P from later in the year showed no signs of the band fading.

CROWBAR - "This music is slow and fat."  "This is the kind of music you have on a workout tape if you're skinny, and you want to get fat."  No dates or titles confirmed here or anything but sludge metal innovators Crowbar entered the studio just two weeks ago to begin recording their tenth studio album to commemorate the band's 25th year of existence (/ punishment).  Just to emphasize how serious band leader Kirk Windstein is about the project, he recently left Down to devote 100 per cent focus on it.  If and when the album is released this year, it will be their first since 2011's 'Sever the Wicked Hand'.

DOCTOR SMOKE - Doctor Smoke have got to be one of the top two or three acts from the rock n roll mecca of Mingo Junction, Ohio.  From the looks and sounds of it Doctor Smoke is an ambitious band and I mean that in the best possible way.  By the time I'd caught wind of their free bandcamp demo, their crowdfunding campaign was already underway.  Based on the strength of the four songs from the demo the band more than met their target campaign goal and didn't stop to count the money, they went right into the studio and recorded their upcoming album which was finished tracking after three or four days and is now being mixed.  This quartet wastes no time, they are fast workers and smooth operators.  I recently described the band's sound as "compar[ing] favorably to Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats but substitutes the latter's Beatles influence for that of Pentagram".  I was fairly proud of that description because it felt like all net from three point range to me.  I also posted the Doctor Smoke live set from Stoner Hands of Doom XIII recently and you can watch the 30 minute video for a preview of what to expect from the album (hint: it's good).

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Maidstone, UK prog/doom duo Crowned In Earth have entered the studio but nothing is confirmed, if and when new recordings materialize there will be rejoicing in the Paranoid Compound.  Demon Eye's debut full-length 'Leave the Light' comes out January 24 on Souseller Records.  This one would be on my most anticipated list but I've already heard it and can confirm the anticipation is certainly warranted!

2013 Chronicle (Year in review) part 9 - Best of August 2013

August 2 - Picaporters (Elefantes)

August 5 - Causa Sui (Euporie Tide)

August 6 - NIGHT DEMON (ST EP) - There are a mountain of terrific 4-song E.P.'s on the market but few generate as much excitement as 'Night Demon'.  For fans of metal, this is like being transported through time and space.  The year is 1980, the place is a pocket dimension in which bicep flexing, beer-spitting riffs combine with soaring clean vocals.  If that sounds obnoxious to you, then you are wrong.  Original review here.  Get it hereHighlights include: "Night Demon" and "The Chalice".  Rating 4.5/5

August 9 - BEELZEFUZZ (ST) - Maryland doom trio Beelzefuzz released their debut record through Church Within Records on this date and I haven't been able to put it down since.  Soaring vocals are entwined around a big epic sound to create one of the more infectious albums of the year.  Original review here.  Get it hereHighlights include: "Lonely Creatures" and "Hypnotise".  Rating 5/5

August 10 - Weedpecker (ST)

August 13 - ICE DRAGON (Born a Heavy Morning) - Ice Dragon's most ambitious album to date cuts a wide arc across the various musical guises of the band.  From AM radio pop opener "Wakin' Up" to a middle section that's as heavy in atmosphere as a migraine, the album is a shitty day in microcosm, which is sucks to live through but is great to listen to.  This album also marked the first time that Ice Dragon found themselves on CD (through Navalorama Records).  Original review here.  Get it hereHighlights include: "I'm Lost" and "The Past Plus the Future Is Present".  Rating 4.5/5

August 15 - SPIRAL SHADES (Hypnosis Sessions) - This cross-continental collaboration is a marvel of the internet age.  Khushal brings Ozzy-esque vocals from India with a flair that can only come from his cultural heritage while Filip cut his teeth as youtube cover song sensation Deventy before bringing a startlingly organic style of guitar shredding complete with amazing riffs from The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Norway.  This 9-song demo is incredible.  Original review here.  Get it hereHighlights include: "Illuminati" and "Torment".  Rating 4.5/5

August 24 - The Myrrors (Ramona Parra single)

August 25 - Arkham Witch (Hammerstorm)

August 27 - 45 Rats (Electric)

August 27 - RED HOT REBELLION (Melt the Sky) - Dayton, Ohio's Red Hot Rebellion only knows one speed: the speed of projectile vomit.  This 5-song EP is the follow-up to last year's stellar self-titled 10-song collection and it continues the band's white knuckled focus on pumping out party anthem rock n roll.  Don't miss this one!  Get it hereHighlights include: "You Bring The Thunder, I'll Bring The Lightning" and "Alcohol".  Rating 4.5/5

August 27 - SPACE MUSHROOM FUZZ (A Possible Paradox) - 'A Possible Paradox' was Space Mushroom Fuzz's second album of the year and it wouldn't be their last.  This six-song space rock trip continued to explore the hidden boundaries between 70's hard rock riffs, trolling the outer limits of melody and growing cultures of free flowing improvised jams like fungal spores in a petri dish.  Original review here.  Get it hereHighlights include: "For a Lifetime" and "A Possible Paradox".  Rating 4/5

August 28 - Djinn & Miskatonic (Forever in the Realm)

August 30 - CHURCH OF VOID (Dead Rising) - It didn't take long for this Finnish doom metal quintet to make an impact on the scene.  After releasing an excellent 4-song E.P. early in the year, the band signed with the impeccable Svart Records and released their first full-length album on this date.  It's a killer record that brought out the metal aspect in the band's doom metal sound.  Church of Void have marked themselves as a band to watch in the coming years.  Original review here.  Get it hereHighlights include: "Winter Is Coming" and "Dead Rising".  Rating 4/5

August 30 - DOCTOR SMOKE (Demo 2013) - Here's a band that quite literally came from out of nowhere and blew my socks off ...  From a tiny town in Ohio, Ole Doc Smoke's 4-song debut may be the best, catchiest E.P. I've heard since Moon Curse's unimpeachable 5-track debut from last year.  This new band compares favorably to Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats but substitutes the latter's Beatles influence for that of Pentagram.  After a successful crowdfunding campaign, the band has recently finished recording their first full-length album.  Based on the strength of this E.P. it promises to be an early contender for album of the year for 2014.  Original review here.  Get it hereHighlights include: "The Willow" and "The Seeker".  Rating 5/5

August 30 - Moonbow (The End of Time)

August 30 - Stonegriff (Prologus Magicus)

August 31 - ARROWHEAD (Atomsmasher) - How this album nearly passed me by is a testament to my own ignorance as Super Doom Chart contributors kept voting for it over and over again for a period of months.  I can see why they did almost instantly when I finally gave it a spin.  An authentic desert rock sound that gives Vista Chino a run for their money, this Aussie trio quietly released one of the absolute best fuzz rock albums of the year on this date.  Get it hereHighlights include: "Eagle Death Machine" and "Blood From a Stone".  Rating 4.5/5

August 31 - The Auras (ST EP 2)

August 31 - BLACKWITCH PUDDING (Taste the Pudding) - This is one I only caught onto recently, but it's a great one (thanks to Sludgelord for bringing the band to my attention).  What we've got here is perhaps a stateside equivalent to the UK band Groan, who are all about good times party anthem hard rock played fast and mean.  Get it hereHighlights include: "Mortre'D" and "Super Sluts From Outer Space".  Rating 4/5

PARANOID Thoughts:
If you didn't know this already I am Canadian, living outside of Vancouver, BC.  What can I say?  I don't mind being a homer and giving just a little bit extra support to my neighbors, that's what we do up here because we're fucking polite.  Got it!?!?  2013 was a strong year for Canadian hard rock and metal, maybe the strongest I've ever seen.  With debut albums by La Chinga, Anciients and Pyres drumming up attention from a variety of sources, you might say it was a banner year for Canuck rock.

However, Canada still lags behind the rest of the world in terms of the amount of heavy underground bands compared to other small market nations.  It's a boot time Canada started flexing its igloo-living, moose-wrestling, lumberjack-job-having muscles.  There is hope though, we're a maturing nation when it comes to the world of entertainment and the arts.  Therefore 2014 promises to be just as strong a year as 2013 if not stronger with amazing albums by Sandveiss [see the paranoid review by Love Among Ruins here], the Sludgelord approved Dead Ranch and the Shadow Kingdom Records released self-titled Funeral Circle album all set to make an impact on the Paranoid Best Of 2014 list already.

Oddly, I never actually heard what may have been the best hard / stoner rock album to come out of Canada this year, that being 'Furiosity' by Monster Truck.  I've heard the singles on the radio and I actually just grabbed it so don't give me too hard a time about it, we Canadians are kind of sensitive.

The Top 10 Canadian Albums of 2013:
1). Blood Ceremony - 'The Eldritch Dark' (Toronto, Ontario)
2). Tumbleweed Dealer - ST (Montreal, Quebec)
3). La Chinga - ST (Vancouver, B.C.)
4). Pyres - 'Year of Sleep' (Toronto, Ontario)
5). Holy Mount - 'Alpic' (Toronto, Ontario)
6). Anciients - 'Heart of Oak' (Vancouver, B.C.)
7). Black Wizard - 'Young Wisdom' (Vancouver, B.C.)
8). Diablo Strange - 'Sordid Tales' (Moncton, New Brunswick)
9). The Auras - ST EP 2 (Toronto, Ontario)
10). We Hunt Buffalo - 'Blood From a Stone' EP (Vancouver, B.C.)
Honorable mention: Monster Truck - 'Furiosity' (Hamilton, Ontario / never heard it, bro)

E.P. Epidemic III

As promised in the introduction to E.P. Epidemic II, here's part III featuring Doctor Smoke, Dozer, The Grave, March the Desert and the one and only Truckfighters ...

DOCTOR SMOKE - Demo 2013 (4 songs / 16:23) - Doctor Smoke came crashing and banging from out of nowhere with an amazing demo and an indiegogo campaign already set up to record their debut full-length.  My head is still spinning from the sudden impact.

The demo consists of three face melting originals and a Pentagram cover.  Between Earthen Grave's blistering cover of "Relentless" and Doctor Smoke's cover of "Pentagram (Sign of the Wolf)" that makes two awesome covers of my two favorite Pentagram songs to get my blood up within the span of a few short months.  But, of course, we're strictly talking Doctor Smoke and it's the originals that are the real draw here.

Doctor Smoke may be fresh out of "meds school", but they seem to have their Ph.D. in fuzz in hand.  The band boots the swinging saloon doors open on "The Willow", and they walk in and own the place.  Women want them, men want to be them and all that jive.  It's a smooth track, heavy, a confident feel from top to bottom, with a perfect flow from beginning to end, a nice wah solo to boot.  Doctor Smoke may not blow your mind with a whole new way of looking at music, they make their hay with some straightforward filthy and extremely heavy doom rock, sometimes that's the hardest thing of all to pull off.  These guys do pull it off and do it well.  While doom is known for it's grinding, dirge-like qualities (I think immediately of the "arrived 45 minutes late to the doom show, didn't miss the first note" meme), Doctor Smoke's identity appears to hinge on high energy.  In the middle section of the demo the band hits their stride.  "Blood & Whiskey" blends directly into "The Seeker" without missing a beat.  Once again, high energy and sleazy riffs up the stakes here to go along with some killer solos, nice dynamics and vocals which are just a touch deeper than Uncle Acid's.  All this combines to make Doctor Smoke a potent blend of the finest smoke.  This demo is available as a 100% FREE DOWNLOAD on bandcamp right now.  Inhale deeply from this demo, doctor's orders!

DOZER - Vultures (6 songs / 26:18) - Dozer's first new sounds in five years are actually eight or nine years old.  "Leftovers" from the 'Through the Eyes of Heathens' demo sessions in 2004-05, the six tracks that make up the 'Vultures' EP are strong enough to be most bands' standout career highlights.  "The Imposter", my favorite of the bunch, was a #1 Paranoid hit earlier in the year on my Top 25 song charts when it was released on a split single with countrymen NYMF (and what a strong three song single that was!).

I assume that most Paranoid readers know Dozer quite well, but there are some of us out there who are just getting her going at this party we call stoner rock.  If you haven't had time to go back and sample the above mentioned album or 'In the Tail of a Comet' well you should know that Dozer are legends in the field for a reason.  If you make 'Vultures' your introduction to the band you can hear right away how the band got it's well-earned reputation.  Keep in mind these are the songs that didn't make the grade for their Small Stone Records debut, but they are great!  Melody is a living thing which breathes and Dozer respirates with power and emotion, always.

Well, having now (finally!) listened to 'Through the Eyes of Heathens' I've got some perspective on the 'Vultures' EP, though only a little.  The songs which made it onto the LP surge with power and dynamics, the pre-production demos here that didn't make the cut are positively subdued in comparison with little of the stomp and pulse of those that did.  However, we are talking about demos here and so they aren't as well recorded or polished by their very nature.  That all said, the songs on 'Vultures' are still excellent and not only hold up on their own, but they ought to hold longtime fans over until the next Dozer release whenever that may be.

More than that however, when taken as its own thing, when not compared to the songs that made the album, what you find here is an incredibly solid six song set.  The six "lost" tracks burst with an energy all their own as compositions if not well rendered in the recording.  "Last Prediction" in particular is electrifying in its stop and start structure, featuring an eight bar guitar solo that is just mind-blowing.  The end of each line of the guitar solo overlaps with the pause on the main riff, ringing out before the main riff hacks its way back in.  Really, you've got to hear this, it's incredible!  What's even more incredible is that at the time, the song was left on the shelf.  This is a potential future #1 on the Doom Chart, for what it's worth.

THE GRAVE - Demonia (5 songs / 33:32) - Argentinian traditional doom trio The Grave have been on the Paranoid radar since summer time but they unfortunately slipped through the cracks here until now.  Their 5 song EP isn't flashy, there's certainly not a lot of trickery behind what they do, but there is a bit of that Halloween-y trick or treat vibe going on here.  The band treats listeners to a spare accompaniment.  The Grave start with a riff, then add drums.  Later, vocals are added.  Voila.  Done.  There's absolutely no pretension with this band and I love them for it.

'Demonia' has a very raw, live sound that can hardly be distinguished from their later live recording, 'En Vivo 2013'.  As I keep harping on, there's no trickery with this band, just an honest aesthetic with an eye out toward the traditional and metallic doom.  The EP starts off with an eerie and memorable clip from the 1971 film Simon, King of the Witches before spilling out into a pulsing riff on "Lord of Mirrors".  The whole thing is full of film clips and incendiary riffs in the great doom tradition.  Riffs like conflagrations, such as can be heard and felt on "Luciferian Woman".  You start to hear little pops and cracks in the recording and the whole thing begins to take on a "lost recording" feel, which only lends dark power to 'Demonia'.  It sounds as though it was recorded through the other side of a dimensional membrane.  It sounds as though it wasn't recorded so much as forged in a cauldron.  The fidelity is still decent and besides, I like a little wear and tear on my music.  By the time "Luciferian Woman" plays out, the band has you in its power.  Each song then bleeds into the next as you drown in a consumption of riffs.  As I said, not a lot of trickery here, The Grave just plugs in and plays.  The style is all their own, molten riffs, clean and deep vocals which grasp toward the epic and an incredible atmosphere.

MARCH THE DESERT - Waves on the Moon (3 songs / 18:25) - March the Desert erupted onto the Paranoid consciousness early this year with their excellent self-titled debut.  It didn't take too long for the band to re-emerge with perhaps an even stronger performance on three song E.P. 'Waves on the Moon'.  This young band from Brighton in the south of England carry on the sacred English tradition of being heavier than thou.  From The Pretty Things to Cream to Black Sabbath to Electric Wizard and beyond, the country that gave birth to the tradition of upping the heavy ante has found yet another deep rumbling voice in these native sons.  Opening track "Frown Curve" proves this beyond the shadow of a doubt, it's one of the heavier songs I've heard in a long while.  Once again the band revels in a Blue Cheer style riff staged in a doomy dirge setting.  The recording itself happens to fall on the lo-fi side of the coin, but the sound of it only adds to the Blue Cheer atmosphere.

But the U.K. isn't only responsible for some of the heaviest sounds the world has ever heard, it's also the birthplace of some of the most psychedelic.  Again, March the Desert proves they are game to toss their collective hat in among the legends on title cut "Waves on the Moon", a song which may go down as one of the ten "most" psychedelic songs I've ever heard.  And I've heard a lot of psychedelic music, particularly British psychedelic music at its most freaked out.  Heavy reverb on the vocals and a wah blissed guitar lick combine with a funky walking bassline before cutting out to the bridge and beyond.  This song will take you to an underwater world and drown you in reverb.  Final number "Tabula Rasa" finally answers that age old question:  What would Jimi Hendrix sound like if he played doom metal riffs through Blue Cheer's gear?

As three song EP's go, they don't come much tighter than this.  You can name your own price at March the Desert's bandcamp page by clicking the links on the player below.

TRUCKFIGHTERS - The Chairman (4 songs / 33:48) - Truckfighters' 'The Chairman' is like a single and mini live album in one.  By the time Truckfighters release their new album, 'Universe' on January 24 2014 it will have been about five years since the unveiling of 'Mania', the band's last record.  That's roughly the same amount of time between albums as Witchcraft's recent 'Legend' album and their previous record 'The Alchemist'.  When Witchcraft returned, they did so with a new sound which was little short of a reinvention of the wheel.  They showed the world and the legions of bands who have followed in their footsteps what the next step in the evolution of the Scandanavian hard rock sound could be.  On 'Legend', Witchcraft took Retro Rock into the future, and if that doesn't blow your mind then you might not have much of one to begin with.  The reason I'm going on at length about Witchcraft is because, Truckfighter's new song (the only new one on this EP), "The Chairman" has much the same feel.  Trucfighters have always been a different kind of band with a unique take on stoner rock, but "The Chairman" takes things to another level.  Manipulating tone and melody in novel ways, Mr. Dango shows the stoner rockers of the world how much more effective full-tilt heaviness can be when framed around high toned melody.  Perhaps I'm not as familiar with Truckfighters as I should be, perhaps I shouldn't be as surprised by this song as I am, it wasn't quite what I was expecting.  Fortunately, the surprise is a pleasant one, so don't be surprised how impressed I am with this song.  The new album may be something different entirely, something amazing.

Recorded earlier this year on the band's Australian excursion, the three live tracks here bring the band's live energy into strong focus.  It's a cool document.  Too often ignored by bands, the Australian audience recorded here proves they have energy to match.  Indeed, when the crowd starts shouting the chorus during Truckfighters traditional show opener, "Desert Cruiser", it is positively electrifying, even at a distance of many months and miles.  The crowd is game from the word go, trading call and response with vocalist Ozo on the very first run through the chorus.  The only thing I begin to wonder is whether any of my Australian stoner internet buds were at the show, immortalized on recording.  Next the band plays a terrific version of "Monte Gargano" from 'Mania' and "Traffic" from 'Phi' so that all three albums are represented.  All this makes 'The Chairman' probably the best E.P. in the world.

I grabbed my copy of 'The Chairman' from itunes.  You can also find it on 10" vinyl at the Truckfighters online shop.

Doctor Smoke Full Set from Stoner Hands of Doom XIII

Appearing out of nowhere from a village called Mingo Junction in Ohio, Doctor Smoke seem to have an "it" factor to them.  The band combines many of the best elements of the stoner and doom sounds into a sleek and heavy rock n roll beast.  I'll be featuring the band right here, sometime next week and I'll get more into it then.  A week ago, Doctor Smoke appeared at Strange Matter in Richmond, Virginia for the Stoner Hands of Doom XIII festival and their full set has been posted to youtube.  It was shared to me via their Indiegogo campaign [link below] which they set up to fund their debut full-length album.  I'm not sure if I should be sharing this video or not, but like a good journalist, I cannot keep a secret.  I believe it's the people's right to know!!  The 31 minute show features a couple of the songs from the band's already released demo [link(s) below], but the bulk of the set is comprised of songs from the upcoming full-length album.  Here's your sneak preview.  Enjoy ...

(and if you do enjoy, please contribute to the band's indiegogo campaign)
