Last week, From Beyond was back in the studio writing and recording the band's first full-length LP demo, with plans for a special release later in 2013. But there's more good news--From Beyond's first official music video has this day been published on YouTube. The song, and video, are dedicated to the brilliant films of José Mojica Marins AKA 'Coffin Joe'. Cthulu calls upon you to watch it, like it, share it with your minions.

Weekly Mailbag for 12/31/12 - 01/04/13

A look at what came in the mail this week with quickie reviews ...

Deep Space Destructors - II - The band sent this one to me and I was excited to see it come in.  Thanks to facebook, the name Markus Pitkanen was familiar to me and I wasn't sure what it was at first.  It turns out it was a full-length album of four headtripping songs by the band Deep Space Destructors.  Deep Space Destructors is a progressive rock trio from  Oulu, Finland.  They worship the riff and have combined 60s and 70s psych, blues, rock and prog love with stoner and doom sensibilities to create an expansive and unique brand of "progressive doomsday spacerock".  There's a lot of crypticism about this record.  The disc itself features no song titles, no liner notes or any information whatsoever.  It doesn't even have any writing on the spine.  The only text at all is the band's logo on the bottom right hand corner of the front cover. I'd love to know who did the incredible four-panel psychedelic cover art, because it warrants its own attention.  This CD version of the album also comes with a bonus fourth track not available on their bandcamp.

From Beyond - The Color Out of Space EP - I'm not really a vinyl kind of guy.  I was born in the early 80s when the vinyl format was going out of style and I remember a time when the LP was a clunky old dinosaur that wasn't compact, you couldn't listen to it outside of the house and the scratchiness of old records not only didn't have the best sound quality, but actually detracted a bit from experiencing your music in fully high fidelity.  That's all changed now as (amazingly) vinyl outsells CDs (at least that's how it seems, there are way more record shops in Vancouver than there are CD shops ... it's not even close) and that might all change now for me personally with this full-sized 12" glow in the dark vinyl EP.  It's a wonderful package with amazing cover and sleeve art.  You've got to see this thing.  Now the only question is playing it.  I have one other record, the lone Parrish & Gurvitz LP that as far as I know has never been re-issued or released on CD.  My girlfriend has a small vinyl collection and a record player but no needle.  It's an Onkyo Multiac 60p.  If anyone knows where I can get a needle for this, or has one to sell, get in touch by the email on the sidebar, please.  Highlights include "The Dead Still Ride" and "The Color Out of Space".  Rating 5/5

Greenleaf - Nest of Vipers - This album was only a recent discovery for me but I quickly discovered that it's one of the most addicting albums one can find.  I've listened to it a ton in the past two months and it's still a major part of the regular rotation, alongside Abrahma's 'Through the Dusty Paths of Our Lives'.  They seem to make good companions.  The Borlange based super-stoner-group from central Sweden play a highly melodic style of stoner rock with many classic leanings.  If I'd have had more time with this album it probably would have made my year end top 10.  Highlights include "Case of Fidelity" and "Jack Staff".  Rating 4.5/5

Ichabod - Dreamscapes From Dead Space - But moving on now to one that did make the top 10, Lowell, Mass's Ichabod absolutely floored me with this album.  Psychedelic stoner sludge that has many catchy and addictive moments.  I ordered my copy on CDBaby and it didn't take long at all to get here, just over ten days or so.  Believe me, that's pretty quick for my mail service.  The CD itself comes in a gatefold digipack with the lyrics printed and it's the first time I can really look at the awesome cover art up close.  This would look great as a vinyl cover thumbtacked to the wall.  Highlights include "Huckleberry" and "All Your Love".  Rating 4.5/5

Mount Fuji - ST - For anybody who read the full interview I did with Mount Fuji will know that this was a gift from the band.  According to them, I'm the only guy in Canada with a Mount Fuji CD!  Once again, their 90s grunge rock and power groove metal sound is right up my alley and if you're around the age of 30 and grew up in the grunge era then this music is definitely for you.  Of course, there's a lot more to the band than that, they have a strong individual identity in terms of sound and their vocalist Miguel's heartfelt performance is quite striking at times.  If you haven't by now, go ahead and check them out.  Highlights include "Head on Fire" and "Simple Depression Guide".  Rating 4.5/5

Natur - Head of Death - There were a couple really great old school metal albums from 2012 including entries from Arkham Witch, Dawnbringer, Venomous Maximus and Ghost Tower and Natur's full length debut 'Head of Death' was among the very best.  You don't necessarily expect this kind of sound coming from New York City but here it is, long hair, leather jackets, upside down crosses and old school metal chops.  I have no idea why it took me so long to order the CD version but when I finally did, I ordered it directly from the label, Earache records on the cheap.  Highlights include "Decion" and "Vermin Rift".  Rating 4.5/5

Yama - Seaquake - Yama definitely rocked my world.  Around April, May, "Seaquake" was blowing up the charts and it was long, long overdue that I should grab this one for take out.  It's a three song EP, all three songs are great, of stoner doom from Tilburg / Utrecht, Netherlands with harmonica that lends the music more of a country western feel than a bluesy kind of feel, but it's heavy all the same, and it's cheap (the price, not the quality) 5 euros on bandcamp.  I kind of want a T-shirt now ...  The best part is this Dutch four piece is currently in studio recording a full-length album even as I write this.  Highlights include "Seaquake" and "Hollow".  Rating 4.5/5

December 2 - FROM BEYOND (The Color Out of Space EP) - Houston, Texas space / doom trio From Beyond's second EP of their rookie year isn't a complete departure from their first, but it does reveal them as a restless and ambitious band, never content to sit on a sound and ever ready to explore new ground.  Four great songs, each different in texture and style.  'The Color Out of Space' is an advancement from 'One Year' and it leaves me incredibly excited about the future of this band.  I was particularly fond of my recent review of this EP, and so were the band.  You can read it here.  Get it here.  Highlights include "The Dead Still Ride" and "The Color Out of Space".  Rating 5/5

December 2 - Mother Gun (Human EP)

December 6 - MOTHERSLOTH (Hazy Blur of Life) - Madrid, Spain based quartet Mothersloth play a very metallic style of sludge and doom.  Their four song EP is full of chunking and squealing heavy metal guitar, big throaty vocals and the heavy-hitting stylings of their drummer, the wonderfully-named, Gog. Get it here.  Highlights include "Pile of Fortune" and "Goliath".  Rating 3.5/5

December 7 - YEAR OF THE GOAT (Angels' Necropolis) - "Here we go again.  Yet another Swedish retro rock band."  Wrong.  Year of the Goat is a retro band with a difference.  They pay their fair share of homage to times past without slavishly attempting to recreate specific eras.  Rather, they are collageists who take a bit from here, take a bit from there and add their own flame to the fire.  The end result is eight terrific songs, a sweeping album full of excellent performances.  Find it here.  Highlights include "Spirit of Fire" and "I'll Die For You".  Rating 4/5 (full review coming soon)

December 12 - Enos (All Too Human)

December 13 - GEEZER (Handmade Heavy Blues) - Geezer don't lie.  Just look at the album title and that should give you your best clue as to what you might find on this fine 10 song collection.  Fans of Five Horse Johnson or Heavy Eyes will find a lot to love from this New York power trio, but fans of Robert Johnson, Son House, Willie Brown, etc. might love it even more.  Get it here.  Highlights include "Pony" and "I'm Coming Home".  Rating 4/5

December 13 - HELLRYDE INC. (Hellryde Incorporated) - I'm hearing this more and more and I like it.  Monterrey, Mexico's four piece Hellryde Inc play metal with groove and stoner elements.  The guitars squeal, the drums thrash, the bass is distorted to near inaudibility, but the songs and the riffs are built on a stoner foundation.  Check it out, this is high class stuff.  Highlights include "Piss Me Off" and "Insomnia".  Rating 4/5

December 13 - Stonebringer (Ocean of the Brave)

December 14 - THE HEAVY EYES (Maera) - After releasing one of the best albums of 2011, what do Memphis blues heavyweights The Heavy Eyes do for an encore?  They've thickened up their sound, the riffs are bigger, the grooves are filthier, the songs are tighter, the hooks are more memorable.  Simply put, The Heavy Eyes have unleashed a monster of an album, one of the year's best.  "These Men Are Wolves", "Parado", "Lately" and No. 1 hit "Levantado" are just a sampling of the abundance of standout material.  Read my review.  Get it here.  Highlights include "Lately" and "Levantado".  , Rating 5/5

December 18 - SLOW HEART (Dead Friends and Angry Lovers) - The latest incarnation of Ice Dragon and its multiple personae, Slow Heart is a goth / drone rock exorcism.  This project seems to be an expansion of certain moods and sounds found on Ice Dragon's 'Greyblackfalconhawk' album.  Get it here.  Highlights include "We Want The Night" and "Never Trust a Woman (Dressed in Black)".  Rating 4/5

December 19 - OWL (Christmas Mixtape 2012) - Owl's Christmas mixtape is a collection of free ballin' jams and outtakes, but it's no simple throwaway shit collage.  It's a 44-minute noise fest featuring some really good moments.  I don't think this stuff was recorded with the intention of release so some of it can sound rather poorly, but I listen to a lot of scratchy delta blues records from the 30s and psychedelic underground acetates of the 60s so unmastered de-studiofied recording are alright by me.  And who doesn't love tapes?  I was a diehard tape guy before I was a diehard CD guy.  It wasn't until about '98 when labels stopped making tapes that I finally switched over to CDs ...  Get your gift here.  Highlights include "Chromatose" and "The Demon is Born".  Rating There's something very inherently wrong with 'rating' a Christmas mixtape.

December 21 - 1000mods (Valley of Sand EP)

December 21 - WHEELFALL / A VERY OLD GHOST BEHIND THE FARM split - Heavy, heavy stuff from France.  Wheelfall's still warm on the table album 'Interzone' album has been a critical hit.  This is the first new music AVOGBTF has released in two full years, whose album 'Primary Septagon' is a real favorite at PH.  The wait was worth it.  Crushing doom.  Get crushed here.  Highlights include "Hangman's Laugh" and "Navigating on the Seas of Dementia".  Rating 4.5/5

December 22 - PALACE IN THUNDERLAND (Stars, Dreams, Seas) - This three song demo from New England supergroup Palace in Thunderland is the first release from the group since splitting up in 2007.  Back then they weren't a supergroup, they were just a group.  'Stars, Dreams, Seas' shows some different sides but mostly fits into the stoner / space rock genres.  Get it here.  Highlights include "Beyond The Stars" and "Awakened Dream".  Rating 4.5/5

May 5 - STEAK (Disastronaught) - I talk about Steak a lot on this blog and for good reason: they're really freaking good.  I geeked out the first time I heard "The Butcher".  It was the perfect thing to throw on during scorching hot afternoons while looking for trouble.  It turns out there's no fooling around with this band however, this is thinking man's music with a storyline that runs throughout the five song EP chronicling the rise and fall of evil space emperor Lazarus.  Can't wait to hear their next effort this upcoming April.  Get Disastronaught here.  Highlights include "The Butcher" and "Machine".  Rating 4.5/5

May 10 - SATELLITE BEAVER (The Last Bow) - I was so blown away by this 4 song EP that I'm only now beginning to recover.  The things this Polish quartet are able to do in 18 minutes is staggering.  "Roadtrip" contains four distinct parts and none of them repeat.  I still can't get over it.  Multi-tracked vocals give this an Alice in Chains feel, while the tone or vocal quality is more akin to Marilyn Manson.  The playing is something to behold as well, the guitars are like a tornado of distortion and fury.  Each song sounds like a chaotic riot until you realize the band are the masters and in complete control.  Find it here.  Highlights include "Roadtrip" and "Perishing".  Rating 5/5

May 15 - Pantera (Vulgar Display of Power re-issue)

May 15 - TOMBSTONE (Devil's Ride Demo) - This French trio isn't necessarily doing anything brand new, but when the band has such a knack for churning out great fuzzy doom riffs under the aegis of Sleep, they don't need to.  They have a new album coming soon.  Download the Devil's Ride EP for free here. Highlights include "Devil's Ride" and "Watch Me Bleed".  Rating 4.5/5

May 23 - Jess & the Ancient Ones (ST)

May 24 - UNMOTHERED (ST) - Normally I stay clear of black metal but the Austin Texas based 'innovators of haunt rock' hit the right spot.  What is 'haunt rock'?  Blackened atmospheric sludge metal?  You be the judge.  The band features Matt Moulis of the Hidden Hand on drums.  This album is well worth checking out.  Find it here.  Highlights include "Spectre" and "Gravitons".  Rating 4/5

May 25 - AHAB (The Giant) - Ahab's brand of nautically themed doom is epic and daunting like the ocean itself.  There's nothing really catchy here, but that's not the point.  'The Giant' was a colossal success in terms of vision and execution.  It's an experience unto itself.  And the CD booklet is full of great art, no kidding, you should check it out.  Highlights include "The Giant" and "Aeons Elapse".  Rating 3.5/5

May 25 - DSW (Dust Storm Warning) - First off, check out my review of DSW's 'Dust Storm Warning' here if you haven't already.  This was one of my favorites of the year.  Another one I can't stop talking about.  This was one of the purest and most sophisticated desert rock albums to come out in 2012.  Grab it here.  Highlights include "Outrun" and "Space Cubeship".  Rating 4/5

May 26 - WITCH MOUNTAIN (Cauldron of the Wild) - Critical darlings, Witch Mountain's third full-length album and second since their return in 2005 was a highly memorable slice of slow and punishing doom.  Vocalist Uta Plotkin of course is the star of the show and it's her huge voice belting out that is the most memorable aspect of this album.  Highlights include "Beekeeper" and "Veil of the Forgotten".  Rating 3.5/5

May 29 - DARK EARTH (42012) - Dark Earth are a bay area three piece that plays a thrashy style of stoner doom metal.  Their song "Evil King" is one of the catchiest songs I've heard all year, it's still in my head.  The rest of the album is pretty special, too.  Available for free download on bandcamp, don't miss it!  Highlights include "Evil King" and "Dark Earth".  Rating 4/5

May 31 - FROM BEYOND (One Year EP) - Houston Texas based trio From Beyond unleashed their debut four song EP on an unsuspecting world and the world has been a darker, doomier place ever since.  Four songs that are each memorable, they each carry their own weight and each were big hits in the Doom Charts this summer.  I listened to "Evil" for the first time wondering why the hell this wasn't the kind of thing I hear on the radio.  It's a great song with a lot of classic elements of commercial success.  Then I realized, this band is only getting started.  Get in on the ground floor here.  Highlights include "Evil (From Beyond)" and "One Year".  Rating 5/5

From Beyond - The Color Out of Space EP (album review)

If I had to put my money on just one band from the dozens of great new acts to come out with first releases in 2012 that had a chance of breaking out of the underground and on to bigger things, it would be From Beyond.  Their first EP showed all the right ingredients of 'crossover' potential: clean production, tight songwriting, pounding rhythms, great riffs, a clean vocal style and melodies that are catchy as hell.  They just seemed to have 'It'.  So my expectations were incredibly high for whatever it was that they were going to do next.  What they did was to draft a second 4 song EP and release it almost exactly half a year later.  It turns out From Beyond is absolutely filled with ideas and is the kind of band never content to sit in a corner musically, they want to stretch their legs and move about, meet new sounds.  The four songs on 'The Color Out of Space' EP are as different from each other as the disc itself is from their earlier effort the 'One Year' EP.

Sometime in late August the band pre-released the opening track "Hexagram" with a brief interview on the old Stonerobixxx website.  At that time the 'One Year' EP was still warm on the table, a mere three months old and it was immediately apparent after a quick listen that the band had already moved on from the sonic template of their first release.  But this wasn't a 'quick listen' kind of song this isn't a 'quick listen' kind of EP.  According to the band, the song (and I'm supposing this entire EP?) was recorded in a large empty warehouse (on a stormy night to boot) creating an incredible resonance, especially from the drums.  The song builds slowly and isn't as immediately catchy as what was found on 'One Year', with the exception of the song's coda, "You better run 'cause, God is not here!"  But a song doesn't have to be immediately catchy to be good or accessible.  This song is like a warning shot to the listener's expectations.  The musical ideas presented on this (glow in the dark vinyl!) disc are more complex and challenging than what came before.  Gone are the streamlined song structures and clean straight-forward production, but what remains is the high quality songwriting and the soulful performances.

A couple weeks before the EP was made available for pre-sale on Halloween, the band released a second track, "The Dead Still Ride".  Pre-releasing half an album is a bold move, but no bolder than the sounds of the first two tracks listeners heard.  "The Dead Still Ride" is the ballsy biker rock anthem that the song's title suggests and was still nothing like the (relatively) older material.  The guitar revs up at the beginning of the track and launches down Highway 666, punctuated by a drivin' beat, the song is hard, heavy and melodic with harmonized vocals during the chorus.  Like "Hexagram" it cruised into my top 5 and was a mainstay on the Doom Charts for weeks.

Then the big day finally came when the EP was officially released in its entirety, three full months after the song "Hexagram" was debuted.  Fans of the band finally got to hear the other two songs from the EP and they would not be disappointed.  The first of the two is called "At Midnight (I'll Steal Your Soul)" and at a teaspoon under five minutes long is about a third shorter than its companion.  It shows much of the hallmarks of the first track, heavy dowtuned riff and big resonant drums, adding some new elements into the mix, such as lifeless and mournful harmonized vocals that sound like they were sung by dead themselves and a great nod to classic doom in the Death SS / Paul Chain mold, as the organ gets the dust wiped off it for this one.  A long instrumental section in the middle shines a dark spotlight on the terrific horrorific riff.  This may be the heaviest thing these guys have recorded yet and will become a new Halloween standard.  Of course, the song is good anytime, not just Halloween, especially stormy nights.

The title track, a more subdued number than what those familiar with the band's previous output might expect, is From Beyond weaving a space rock tapestry.  The song starts off slowly much like "Iron Man" before launching into the main riff.  Like all the riffs on this EP, it's not necessarily going to burn into your mind and stay there immediately, but it grows like a fungoid demon in the brain with each successive listen.  The riffs here are titanic and heavy.  Just past the halfway point of this near 15 minute colossus the music breaks down and the band paints a sonic picture of space itself, complete with eldritch and smoky creatures which writhe and undulate through the endless ethereal void, only to be passed on their unknowable journeys at light speed by Lovecraft's color itself on its way down to unsuspecting earth.  The role of the color is played by the band which kicks back in after about a minute or so of ambient soundscape described above.  Towards the end of the track, the band takes one more pass at the main riff of the song.  This must be that very color out of space entering the earth's atmosphere only to land at a lurching halt on poor Nahum Gardner's farm.  Or it could be as the band describe on their website (see link below) as The Color Out of Space landing and ravaging all in its vicinity until all hope seems lost (first 7 minutes), then come three electric warriors who destroy the thing with a wall of sound (return), that final pass at the main riff being the creature's death throes as hope returns to the earth.  I don't know.  Let's just say my interpretation is the correct one.  Musically, one might say it's an expansion and a reversal of the kinds of ideas found in the title track to their previous EP 'One Year', which was about the coming singularity and man's impending machine induced apocalypse.  It's a grim song that left little hope for the future.  "The Color Out of Space" does just the opposite.  Last I heard we have 30 years or so before the singularity actually hits so let's just all put our collective feet up and listen to some excellent tunes in the mean time.

After releasing two terrific EPs in a span of six months I'm very curious to see what this band does next.  It might come sooner or it might come later than we expect but when it comes I'm sure it will knock both expectations and socks off.  Until then there's 'The Color Out of Space', a dark and heavy tour de force by an up and coming band.
