PARANOID Spotlight on:
ETERNAL CHAMPION – “War at the Edge of the End”
Eternal Champion are a new band from the home of the greatest comedian of all-time Bill Hicks, Austin, Texas.  They've released two songs on bandcamp since their inception in December of 2012, the second [b-side] of which, "War at the Edge of the End" debuted on last week's Most Paranoid Songs list and currently holds up the back end of the Top 10 here [see link at #10 listing].  The song, along with its corresponding a-side "The Last King of Pictdom" was released on 7" vinyl and cassette in the first half of 2013 but didn't come across my radar screen until the year was nearly over.

They are a five piece band, double-fisting guitars, playing epic heavy metal in the classic vein saturated in fantasy influences.  The heavy metal warriors in the band also spend time in Power Trip and Iron Age so this isn't some group of greenhorns bounding aimlessly on a journey of discovery.  Eternal Champion's steel is keen-edged, these veterans are ready for Ragnarok and their seat in Valhalla.  The band has a third song up on youtube from their performance at Chaos In Tejas called "Invoker" [watch it here], and from the video you can see what the band is all about: namely tempests of flying hair, musky / muscular riffs, sorcerous songwriting and of course, power vocals.

With no hype machine reminding you to check out their bandcamp page or their next show assaulting you from fifty directions every day, a band like this must stand or fall on the strength of the music alone.  Well Eternal Champion stand tall, true to their name, like the eye of Sauron from the craggy peaks of Mordor.

PARANOID Spotlight on:
DEMON EYE – “Shades of Black”
Debuting at #12 this week is Demon Eye's "Shades of Black", a song that was originally released on the Raleigh, NC quartet's debut six-song E.P. nearly a year ago.  Why is a song that's nearly a year old debuting at the #12 spot?  Because it's being released on the band's full-length album 'Leave the Light' this Friday.  The album features all six E.P. tracks and a clutch of all-new tunes.  I'm glad the band and their label, Soulseller Records went this way with it because it gives me a chance to re-acquaint myself with this tune, a song that was originally somewhat overshadowed by songs like "Hecate", "Silent One" and "Fires of Abalam" (yup, they're all on the new LP).

I wrote a fairly extensive review of 'Leave the Light' for The Sludgelord blog which you can read right here, so I won't rehash all of that wonderful stuff I said about it only to say that I love it and I bet you will too, even if, like me, you already have the original E.P. [see the Paranoid review right here]  Again, five new songs make it well worth picking up with "Adversary" and "Secret Sect" being the strongest of the bunch.

But "Shades of Black" has also been a true standout for me.  Matter of fact, it's been a go-to song to sing and whistle at work over the past few weeks.  It's one of the band's more iconic tracks, featuring the band's trademark guitar sound and curly riffs with a strong whiff of Deep Purple on top.  Don't be surprised if this song goes pretty far up this chart in the coming weeks.  You can pre-order the album by emailing the address found at this link and inquiring about shipping rates.

PARANOID Spotlight on:
VALLEY OF THE SUN – “Gunslinger”
One of the biggest "what the fuck?"s in the entire underground world of stoner rock has been that Cincinnati, Ohio trio Valley of the Sun had been left unsigned and virtually ignored by record labels around the world for years on end.  Well, that's all changed now.  After two well-received E.P.'s the band successfully crowdfunded their debut long-player and made it available to download for all those who helped fund the recording.  The pre-order of the 10 song album was up on bandcamp for weeks while the band searched for a label to help with the distribution and release behind the scenes.  They streamed but a single song from the record, "Gunslinger" which is just a taste of what's to come.  Meanwhile the band inked a deal with Truckfighters's very own Fuzzorama Records to release that album April 1, 2014.  The bandcamp for the album called 'Electric Talons of the Thunderhawk' has been removed but "Gunslinger" is still available to stream at the link listed above (#17).

In a major reversal of fortunes, Valley of the Sun will hit the European roads with Truckfighters and White Miles between February 14 & March 8, playing Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, France, Belgium and the U.K. (whew!).  Being one of the crowdfunders myself, I have my digital copy of the album already and I can say the band's success is well deserved.  The formula found on the band's 'Sayings of the Seers' E.P. of muscular fuzz and high doses of energy is respected without being repeated by rote.  The band has a few new tricks up their sleeves and the album is a full and satisfying listen.  "Gunslinger" isn't the only great song on the album, I'd say it's neither the best nor the least of the collection, it certainly makes for a fitting encapsulation of one side of the band.  The song will be joined by a second, "Maya" soon enough.

HIGH ON FIRE - "SLAVE THE HIVE"
It's taken forever for "Slave The Hive", the new one-off single by High on Fire to break through in this paranoid mind of mine.  I first heard it on and downloaded it from the Scion A/V page where it's available for free [see link in song listing #21 on this week's chart], and thought, "well, this is okay.  But just okay."  It took months for the song to even enter the Doom Chart but it's been on for two weeks now and it's starting to gain traction.  If nothing else, it's a new High on Fire song, and how the hell can I argue with that, the Oakland trio were one of the main reasons I got into this kind of music in the first place and it turns out, after sticking with the song I've come to realize that "Slave the Hive" gives me everything I liked about High on Fire in the first place.  The band reminds me of Motörhead in that they just rock from beginning to end with no mercy.  "Slave the Hive" is just another piledriver in the deck, and that's not a bad thing when you think about it.

The song has been released on a 7" single which was available on the band's recent Scion sponsored North American tour.  It's also the band's first one-off single since the release of "Speak in Tongues", which was a leftover track from the 'Snakes for the Divine' album sessions [listen/download it here].  As far as I know, it's also frontman/guitarist Matt Pike's first new song to be written and released since committing to a sober lifestyle, despite my estimation that the song may be an average High on Fire song (which is still way above the common average), the band seems to have lost none of it's edge.

ZODIAC - "COME SAMHAIN"
Debuting at #21 this week, Zodiac's "Come Samhain" was released on Halloween night on the Queensland quintet's bandcamp page, it's only the fourth recording that the band has issued.  There are platoons of under-the-radar bands that are almost due for some serious exposure and everybody has their own list of these bands, but near the top of mine would be Zodiac.  It's not a great mystery as to why the band hasn't made a ton of noise in the underground press or other venues.  Before Halloween night rolled around the band had exactly three songs to their credit, all of which can be found on their debut 3-song cassette, also available on bandcamp, released in February [review here].

There's a haunting quality to vocalist Ben Peters's voice as he wails soulfully over pitch perfect slow doom riffs provided by Leo Price & Ryan Cooper.  Zodiac slip comfortably into an epic sound and respect tradition by doing a 360 to most epic doom bands and blaze their own trail, avoiding eye contact with familiar road maps.  Soon as "Come Samhain" kicks off, you get a sense of the dynamics at play: a syncopated rhythm [backed by Mikel Elborne on bass and Will Learmouth smashing drums], a pausey riff and the uniquely timbred belt-it-out-to-the-people-in-the-cheap-seats vocal delivery of Peters.  All of these elements converge upon an unsuspecting listener for a "name your price" deal on bandcamp [see embedded link at the listing above].

PARANOID Spotlight on:
ICE DRAGON - STEEL VEINS b/w QUEEN OF THE BLACK HARVEST
At the number 11 spot on this week's list, we've got Ice Dragon, once again returning to their natural home territory, the Paranoid Doom Charts.  The New England quartet's productivity has been of Himalayan proportions over the past two years.  As a matter of fact, they've been so prolific in their output, it's become something of a running joke in the online underground community.  The band is well known for releasing music in wildly varying styles under various monikers with drummer / vocalist Ron and guitarist Joe also involved in other projects, including Qosmic QeyThe Mangled Dead and Serpentipede.  This calendar year the band proper has released an EP (The Soul's Midnight), a full-length album (Born a Heavy Morning) and this single.  In 2012 Ice Dragon released three full-lengths and various other works on singles and compilations, etc.  So on the surface, it would appear the band's creativity has shifted down a gear or two, until you analyze the actual output.

The more you listen to 'Born a Heavy Morning' the more brilliant you realize the album is.  It begins with the dreamy AM radio friendly "Wakin' Up", which leads into an interlude where an alarm clock goes off.  The heavy morning leads into bleak afternoon sludge wherein "The Deeper You Go", the more hopeless things become "We Are The Hopeless" before the character of the song finally admits defeat on the doomy, "I'm Lost".  The point here is that the band pulled out all the stops, suiting the music in a menage of style to suit the overall narrative story being told.  It's the kind of album that's not going to appeal to just anyone, not on first listen anyway.  Ice Dragon have never shied away from challenging listeners and fans by being constantly on the stylistic move stylistically.

And that's what makes this single so interesting.  It's almost a concession, a thank you to fans for dealing all the stylistic challenges the band has presented over the course of the past couple years because this new single features a "classic 'Ice Dragon' sound on these jams.  No funny business."  It's interesting because for a time the band seriously considered permanently turning to a classic AM radio pop style of music.  Well, obviously they didn't and we have the riff saturated, doomy "Steel Veins" backed with "Queen of the Black Harvest".  Ice Dragon proves that all things are possible and that the only limits are self-imposed.  This single goes towards proving that Ice Dragon isn't messing around, everything they've done has been what they've been inspired to do and that's the only way it could be.  It proves that every now and then the band just wants to rock out with some fuzzy jams and like everything else the band does, it comes from a genuine place within them and they do it enthusiastically.  You can download the single for FREE or pay what you want on bandcamp by following the link at the listing above.
