Blood Red Water - Thundersnow in Venice (Official Music Video)

Venice, Italy's sludge doom masters Blood Red Water have released the brand new video for "Thundersnow in Venice", the closing track from their recent 'All the Ills of Mankind' E.P [see review].  It's not the catchiest or hookiest song from the release, but it is perfectly representative of the overall Blood Red Water sound from their first two E.P.'s, including 2012's 'Tales of Addiction & Despair'.  As you may tell from the video thumbnail, it's not a happy sound.  The video is set in Venice and was directed by the band's drummer Fiorica Gasparini.  Like the song itself, the video captures the essence of the band's distinctively despairing sludge.

2013 Chronicle (Year in review) part 10 - Best of September 2013

September 2 - Cult of the Headless Witch (ST)

September 3 - VISTA CHINO (Peace) - The band formerly known as Kyuss Lives! made their debut on this date.  Though it was a debut, it was easy to go in with a whole suite of set expectations, but to their credit, Vista Chino delivered an album that both pays homage (pun unintended) to the band's Kyuss roots and moves in an all-new direction.  This was the record that should by all rights have been the biggest let down of the year, and ends up an easy top 20 pick.  Original review here.  Get it hereHighlights include: "Dargona Dragona" and "As You Wish".  Rating 4.5/5

September 6 - Nonsun (Sun Blind Me)

September 6 - SINISTER REALM (World of Evil) - Shadow Kingdom Records rarely falters in their vision or their judgment, so you know what you were getting into here, old school metal touched by the hand of doom.  Vocalist Alex Kristof puts in a strong Dio-like performance while guitarists Risko & Kantner shred and the rhythm section creates a claustrophobic effect.  Good heavy old school doom right here.  Get it hereHighlights include: "Cyber Villain" and "Dark Angel of Fate".  Rating 3.5/5

September 9 - BLOOD RED WATER (All the Ills of Mankind) - Italian sludge quintet Blood Red Water increased the stakes big time on their second E.P.  The follow-up to last year's 'Tales of Addiction & Despair' was still full of addiction & despair, only the intensity was increased a hundred fold with faster tempos and tighter grooves.  Original review here.  Get it hereHighlights include: "Bad Trip in a Toxic Mind" and "The Outstanding Loss".  Rating 5/5

September 11 - NYMF (From the Dark) - One of the best albums of the year, 'From the Dark' also happens to be one of the hardest to define by genre.  Niklas Sjoberg's vocals are mostly clean if forceful, but sometimes growl, the music mostly moves at a good pace with the force of a jackhammer but is also doomy in places.  I just call it good metal with cool lyrics about werewolf covens and vampires and stuff.  Original review here.  Get it hereHighlights include: "Fear of the Doom" and "Lucifer Takes the Crown".  Rating 4.5/5

September 11 - Sun of Man - (I)

September 13 - Exiles (Wreck)

September 13 - Shades of Deep Water (Waterways)

September 13 - YIDHRA (Hexed) - From L.A. but featuring a thick, filthy, very un-sunny sound the doom metal quintet Yidhra conjured their debut album on this date.  There's nothing cute or pretty about this 9-song collection of doomed death knells, just some extremely atmospheric tunes, thick like black attic mold.  Original review here.  Get it hereHighlights include: "Oath Breaker" and "Mai-Cob".  Rating 4.5/5

September 17 - SUBROSA (More Constant Than the Gods) - Utah's very own experimental doom quintet SubRosa has crafted the go to album to escape the traditional, the expected or the norm (however strange your norm may be). SubRosa push the sonic boundaries into the remote, into the timeless. Sarah Pendleton's violin has a lot to do with it, her highly atmospheric playing style suggests the sound of the future while conjuring images of a pirate-laden and enchanted past. 'More Constant Than the Gods' is a listening experience all its own.  Get it hereHighlights include: "Ghosts of a Dead Empire" and "Cosey Mo".  Rating 4/5

September 17 - Tombstone (Evil Seed single)

September 18 - PALM DESERT (Adayoff) - Recorded in a single marathon session, with much if not most of it improvised or composed on the spot in the studio, 'Adayoff' is a breezy EP that moves through track after track of loose stoner jams.  The "off-the-cuff" way it was put together is part of this E.P.'s haphazard charm.  Original review here.  Get it hereHighlights include: "Dusty" and "Among the Stones".  Rating 4/5

September 18 - WOODWALL (WoodEmpire) - Italian quartet Woodwall's full-length debut already made my dubious "didn't listen to enough" list, unfortunately, but I'm more than happy to rectify that as time trudges onward.  Certainly the most adventurous offering in the stoner / sludge category this year, 'WoodEmpire' is full to the brim with progressive movements, changing dynamics and strange ideas.  Get it hereHighlights include: "WoodEmpire" and "King Stuste".  Rating 5/5

September 20 - Alucarda (D.F.F.L.)

September 20 - Dead Meadow (Warble Womb)

September 24 - Olde (The Gates of Dawn)

September 24 - SASQUATCH (IV) - L.A.'s go-to fuzz rockers let loose their fourth album for Small Stone Records on this date.  What may seem unassuming on first listen soon takes hold of the listener and it isn't too long before you can't stop spinning the record.  Simply put, this is some top notch stoner rock.  Original review here.  Get it hereHighlights include: "The Message" and "Smoke Signal".  Rating 4/5

September 24 - WINDHAND (Soma) - Arguably the biggest doom buzz band in the world of mainstream metal, Windhand's second album and first (full-length album) on Relapse Records had many scratching their heads wondering what all the fuss was about.  It's my assumption that these head scratchers never heard the band's self-released debut and so failed to see the band find their own identity and leave their own  mark on the genre.  'Soma' is an impressive six song collection which casts a dark light on all corners of Windhand's emerging identity while throwing all but the kitchen sink at the listener including the 30 minute-(over)long closer.  Original review here.  Get it hereHighlights include: "Woodbine" and "Orchard".  Rating 4/5

September 27 - Disenchanter (Back to Earth)

PARANOID Thoughts:
Female-fronted.  You read that two word phrase a lot these days.  "Female-fronted occult-based doom metal band ..." is becoming roughly as familiar a phrase as "... a mix of sun and cloud with a chance of showers ...".  The most remarkable aspect of it all remains the fact that it continues to be pointed out in the first place.  I, myself have been known to utter the phrase and it always makes me feel a bit uncomfortable.  In my defense I would like to point out that I usually try to give a reader unfamiliar with a band at least an idea of what to expect from the vocals of ANY band, and if they are instrumental to point that out early in an article as well.  We all have different tastes, some like clean vocals, some don't, etc.  The truth is, the overwhelming majority of metal vocalists are men and I don't see that changing any time soon, so the fact that a band's vocalist is a woman remains an interesting one I suppose.

The issue here of course is the vague generalness of the term "female-fronted".  I'm not sure the phrase has any real meaning whatsoever, and does nothing to prove to me that such different sounding bands with such different vocal styles as say Jess & the Ancient Ones and Shroud Eater have anything in common at all.  What do Kylesa, Windhand & Seremonia have in common?  They are all bands and that's about the extent of it.

Below you'll find a list of my favorite lady singers whose bands released albums in 2013.

Top 10 Vocalists (Female):
1). Jex Thoth (Jex Thoth)
2). Alia O'Brien (Blood Ceremony)
3). Shelly Delbridge (Albino Python)
4). Jane Esther-Collins (Shinin' Shade)
5). Emily Kopplin (Mount Salem)
6). Darcy Nutt (Uzala)
7). Jean Saiz (Shroud Eater)
8). Dorthia Cottrell (Windhand)
9). Noora Federley (Seremonia)
10). Rebecca Vernon (SubRosa)

And just so the dudes don't accuse me of being a 'sexist', here's the men's list.  Some were selected for their singing chops, others for their incredible ability to pen unique and thought provoking lyrics, some even have both those things going for them.  Mostly it's whose words and whose voices that spun around my head in 2013.

Top 10 Vocalists (Male):
1). Marc Gaffney (Gozu)
2). Kevin Schindel (Neon Warship)
3). Aryn Jonathan Black (Scorpion Child)
4). Butch Balich (Argus)
5). Mark Weiner (Earthen Grave)
6). Dee Calhoun (Iron Man)
7). Phil Anselmo (Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals)
8). Ron Rochondo (Ice Dragon / Tentacle / The Mangled Dead)
9). Steve Janiak (Devil To Pay)
10). Philip (Aleph Null)

Blood Red Water - All the Ills of Mankind (album review)

Cover artwork by Alicia.
Blood Red Water's 'Tales of Addiction and Despair' E.P. from early last year was intense.  It was the perfect title for the effort, with half mumbled / half pleading vocals telling the darkest tales to emerge since the days of Alice in Chains's 'Dirt' album and songs like "Junkhead" and "God Smack".  Musically, it couldn't have been farther away from the legendary album and its habit-forming melodies.  Where Alice in Chains's tales of addiction and despair were dirty, Blood Red Water's were filthy and rotten with none of the glamor behind the stories.  This was uncompromising sludge / doom and genuinely captured the feelings of their debut E.P.'s title.  The tone and feel of the incredible opening track, "Ungod" was almost shocking in its intensity.

The band's new E.P., 'All the Ills of Mankind', retains large quantities of that intensity, but injects it with a glamor all its own, blending their hard-as-nails sludge with some interesting sensibilities.  It's a longer effort, and relatively less challenging sacrificing a portion of tone and feel for a greater emphasis on melody.  For all that, Blood Red Water remains a grimy band, soundwise, and 'All the Ills of Mankind' retains a dull matte finish of sludge which seeps out of the pores of the E.P. like the sweat of desperation.

When I'm speaking about interesting sensibilities, I'm talking about two songs in particular, "Bad Trip in a Toxic Mind" and "The Outstanding Loss", which stand out as the best cuts on the album.  What each of these songs have is an unwavering commitment to groove, and groove at the right (mid-)tempo.  It's something that is introduced on opening track "A Ride in the Funhouse" which plunges listeners back into the madcap world of Blood Red Water effectively and eloquently, but is emphasized to the nth degree on the aforementioned two later tracks.  I loved the song "Ungod" for emotive power and dark atmosphere, these two songs, "Bad Trip" and "Loss" may be the catchiest the band has recorded yet.

The band has also added another new wrinkle to their scheme (sorry, it is football season after all), that in the form of vocalist Michele's renewed commitment to singing more melodically and less to wailing in despair, a tendency shown on 'Tales ...' in tracks like "Avoid the Relpase".  Well even while vocalizing in this way, Michele's performance was manic and erratic creating a terrific sense of mental imbalance which suited the mood of the release.  His performance on 'All the Ills' is as even and steady as a surgeon's hand.  Both styles create a sense of cohesion within their own contexts, with 'All the Ills' being altogether steadier and sturdier in the long run.

And that's the thing to remember, this extended play is terrific from top to bottom, the even quality of the songs make it a steady release and the variation of styles and moods provide it with a sturdiness that holds up well to repeat listens.  The more I listen to this thing, the more I like it.  'All the Ills of Mankind' should probably appeal primarily to sludge fans, but there's enough groove and melody on this thing to appeal to just about anybody on some level or another.

Highlights include: "Bad Trip in a Toxic Mind" and "The Outstanding Loss"

2012 Chronicle (Year in review) part 1 - Best of January

Here it is, as promised.  Part 1 of 12 in the year in review ...

January 1 - BLOOD RED WATER (Tales of Addiction & Despair EP) - The year started strongly with the demonic sludge of Italian band Blood Red Water. Their EP "Tales of Addiction and Despair" is a punishing 23 minutes of relentless sludgy doom with the most despairing vocals one can hope to hear  Grab it for free here. Highlights include "Ungod" and "Considerations/Commiserations". Rating 3.5/5

January 4 - IN THE COMPANY OF SERPENTS (ST) - In the Company of Serpents' self titled debut is "best heard through a cloud of dopesmoke and bad vibes", according to the band. Their take on sludge is extremely groove laden and highly addictive. 37 minutes and 6 songs of brutal UK sludge.  You can buy their tape or download the album here. Highlights include "Dirtnap" and "Immolation". Rating 4/5

January 5 - Son of a Witch (ST)

January 5 - ALEPH NULL (Dale EP) - This German doom band released one of the year's better EPs in Dale and it's absolutely FREE on bandcamp.  The title track and "Kill the Colossus" are worth your time (or a possible donation) alone, superbly catchy, heavy and dark.  I haven't been able to get "Kill the Colossus" out of my head since I first heard it.  The rest is great too.  Highlights include "Kill The Colossus" and "Dale".  Rating 4/5

January 8 - Hesper Payne (The Strange Tale of Samuel Gonzalez)

January 16 - Doublestone (Set The World Ablaze)

January 21 - THE BAD LIGHT (Marrow of Sound) - This Californian based band has one of the most unique takes on stoner rock, blending unusual performance styles that sound almost jazz-like, southern fried and lazy, yet the music still comes out distinctly stoner rock.  Sun soaked is a term that comes to mind when thinking about this band.  Their playing styles are often unpredictable and they will push the tension of a build up in a song to the absolute breaking point ... then casually run through the main parts.  The overall effect is something to behold.  This EP really made its hay for me on summer mornings after work.  I can't explain it, but it was the perfect soundtrack for those moments.  You can find the 6 song EP here on bandcamp.  Highlights include "Hypathia" and "Hours Burn".  Rating 4.5/5

January 23 - BEHOLD! THE MONOLITH (Defender, Redeemist) - Excellent, excellent proggy doom with thrash elements Behold! The Monolith's sophomore effort holds not a single bad moment.  They site High on Fire and Mastodon as influences but that really doesn't tell the tale as this band sounds to have transcended their roots and have crafted something highly individualistic.  It's a sci-fi fantasy soundtrack that creates its own visuals.  It's Lord of the Rings in space, it's Star Trek in Mordor.  It's progressive, thrashy doom with neck breaking song structures and killer riffs.  This music is timeless and will be something I come back to for years to come.  And the cover art is excellent.  Get it here. Highlights include "Halv King" and "Desolizator".  Rating 5/5

January 24 - SUMMER LOVE (ST demo) - Anybody who tells you they didn't initially come to this one for the cover art is lying, yet the music found within was truly a pleasant surprise.  This was something I discovered way later in the year but when I found it I made up for the lost time in a major way.  Their name makes it impossible to find any info on the band and their bandcamp page is spare with info as well.  By spare I mean "a complete lack of".  Whatever.  Great doom inspired psychedelic rock with the same vocal effect used by Ozzy on "Planet Caravan" on every song.  That may sound like a gimmick and it may not be everybody's cup of tea but it seems to hit the right spot.  This music is Acid Drenched and terrific.  Highlights include "Voice of a Queen" and "By the Wayside".  Rating 4.5/5

January 27 - PILGRIM (Misery Wizard) - Slow and heavy as a lead bath the lads in Pilgrim play like wizards weaving a spell to slow down and eventually stop all life functions everywhere in the universe.  They make you feel every note and for that reason not a drop of creativity is wasted as the message sinks in heavy as a browbeating. Slow, slow, doom.  Get it here. Highlights include "Astaroth" and "Adventurer".  Rating 3.5/5

January 30 - SPELLJAMMER (Vol. II) - This Swedish foursome's second release totaled three songs and some 26 minutes, each song over 8 minutes long.  Vol. II unleashed a wicked sound of punishing, groovy doom riffs and wailing echoed vocals that sound like a mountaintop lamentation.  The songs were long but were neither repetitive nor overly structured.  The songs were long because the riffs were monumental.  Grab it here.  Highlights include "Electric Ground" and "Aun's Mountain".  Rating 5/5

January 31 - BLACK PYRAMID (II) - Before parting ways with original guitarist / vocalist Andy Beresky the band recorded their second full-length album.  Before releasing 'II' they parted ways with Beresky.   This is a release that sits in no man's land but it produced some very memorable and catchy moments.  Their take on doom was punkier and vaguely Irish sounding in places.  Get it here.  Highlights include "Sons of Chaos" and "Mercy's Bane".  Rating 3.5/5
