PARANOID Spotlight on:
OCTOBER 31 – ‘The Fire Awaits You’
From metal mavens Hell's Headbangers Records comes a re-issue / compilation of a band I would only have dreamed existed when the records first came out.  It's not that I would have understood or respected the band's pedigree (drummer/vocalist King Fowley of Deceased; bassist Jim Hunter of While Heaven Wept & Twisted Tower Dire; guitarist Brian Williams of Overlord), but I could only have imagined pure metal of this caliber existing during its initial release.  This was the late 90's, the day and age of Korn, Limp Bizkit and later Disturbed.  Many of us were forced to get by on this kind of metal, but yearned for a return to the days of early Metallica.  If only I'd have found October 31 back then, how different my life would have been ...

This re-issue combines October 31's 1997 debut album with their 1996 demo and a pair of tribute album cover versions of Iron Maiden ("Public Enema Number One") & Ozzy Osbourne ("I Don' Know").  The true stars of the show here are the first eight tracks which comprise the original 'The Fire Awaits You' album.  The opening trio of which ("The Wizard", "Salem's Curse" and "The Fire Awaits You") is worth the $6.66 price of admission you'll find on the Hell's Headbangers bandcamp page for the digital download, but all 14 songs are worth spinning and once you slap this sucker on you won't feel like stopping midway through.  The 'Voyage to Infinity' demo material isn't as strong vocally or musically, but it hardly matters when themetal isthis sharp.  The horror-themed vocals remind me of Wooden Stake, but the vocals remain consistently clean throughout with a rich Pepper Keenan meets James Hetfield timbre.

The label simultaneously re-released the band's 1999 released second album 'Meet Thy Maker' (which added rhythm guitarist Kevin Lewis to the mix) along with their 1998 EP 'Visions of the End' and four bonus tracks.  This is metal as it was meant to be, as it should always have been.

Though the album is just entering the Doom Charts now I've been listening to it for a couple weeks now, it's the kind of thing that won't go away or be forgotten about any time soon.  (On a final note: I found this awesome interview with the band from May 2000, in it, front man King Fowley says so much while saying very little.)

PARANOID Spotlight on:
THOTHAMON – ‘Prophets of Doom’
Alabama Doom wasn't much of a 'thing' until December 9, when this Birmingham based trio released this six song album.  Matter of fact, aside from thee great Gentlemen Bastards I can't think of a single other stoner / doom band from the yellowhammer state.  So, just what is Alabama Doom all about anyway?  Thothamon rips traditional epic doom with soaring vocals and crushing riffs that aren't shy about showing off their melodic side.

Named after the sorcerous Conan nemesis from The Phoenix on the Sword, Thothamon are obviously influenced by the great Weird Tales writers from the interwar period, Howard, Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith and their pre-psychedelic visions of substantial madness and protean evil.  Musically, the band compares well to Pilgrim, Maze of Roots, The Gates of Slumber, Stone Magnum and Space God Ritual, which isn't a terrible grouping to be associated with by any means.  They aren't coy about showcasing their influences either, 'Prophets of Doom' closes with a festering reading of Saint Vitus's "Born Too Late".

The standout moment is the axe-sharpening "Glory or the Grave".  It may seem at times as though the world is swarming with doom bands with any number of particular takes on the genre.  I still get a cyclopean thrill when I discover an unabashedly traditional doom band like Thothamon.  This is what it's all about, no nonsense metal, played slow with the heavy stench of morbidity.  'Prophets of Doom' is available as a pay-what-you-want download on bandcamp right now, dig into it doom-maniacs, you won't be disappointed.

PARANOID Spotlight on:
BIRCH CROWN – ‘Birch Crown’
Birch Crown is a one man doom project from Gorizia, Italy, a city on the Italian - Slovenian border.  The "one man" in question may be familiar to some of you from the band Deep [featured here], who released their album 'Vol. 1' on bandcamp last summer, and which was recently released in physical format by Transubstans Records.  But musically, Birch Crown has little to nothing to do with Deep.

Birch Crown Doom is deep to be sure, intense, traditional and inimitable all at once, doom borne of a singular vision wherein riffs bloom and branch off in unexpected patterns in an organic, one might say tree-like fashion and drums are an afterthought.  In fact, it might take a couple listens to realize that there are "drum tracks" on every song, these being little more than click tracks.  It's hard to even call these drums "percussive elements" because "percussion" implies some kind of resonance of which there is none to be found here.  Don't let the lack of drums turn you off however, the seductiveness of Birch Crown lies in its foresty, almost folky feelings.  This is no picnic in the woods however, an element of mortal danger lingers overhead of every moment of this 7-track album like the sword of Damocles.

Birch Crown is slowly making an impact in the world of underground doom metal and I wonder if and when we'll hear again from this unusual project.  I certainly hope so.  I also wonder if and when a drummer will be added to the mix and how that might change things.  For now there's 'Birch Crown', an unconventional doom album with unconventional ideas and unconventional riffs that hits that sweet spot of being lost in the darkening woods just before sunset.  The album is holding the #25 spot on this week's list, that's where you'll find the album by clicking through the link ...

PARANOID Spotlight on:
SLOWN – ‘Cosmic Hellrock Deluxe’
'Cosmic Hellrock Deluxe' (subtitled 'The Lost Tapes') is a 7 track collection of Desert / Stoner jams, performed with a sleepy eyed enthusiasm which makes up for the album's shortcomings in recording fidelity.  Apart from the factoid on their bandcamp page that the band is from Hamburg, Germany, it's hard to find any information on Slown, due to their name.  A google search assumes you've made a typo and searches for "Slow - Hamburg" or "Clown - Hamburg", etc. instead.  The best I could do is find Ascii Disko an electronic artist who is "guitarist Kat D.D. Rokk, former guitarist of the band Slown and current guitarist/keyboardist of the sci-fi indie-rock band Venus Vegas."  I have a feeling that this band is no longer around.

The bandcamp page doesn't help much either with a release date of June 6, 1966 (06 / 06 / 66), I don't even know when this thing was put up on bandcamp, let alone when it was recorded.  It might have been recorded in 1966 for all I know, but if I had to take a guess I'd say it was recorded sometime between 2003-2007 or later.  Of course, it might have been recorded a week before it was released, which I assume was sometime around January 10, but I don't think so.  By the way, I would love to be stood corrected on any of this.

But getting back to the only stuff that really matters, 'Cosmic Hellrock Deluxe' offers some meaty stoner grooves with some tasty tones, you just have to be able to look, or rather listen past the poor recordings.  I'm not an audiophile so I'm fine with it.  The most memorable track here has got to be "Mr. Flametongue" which has an excellent desert rock sound where you close your eyes and it's just you, a campfire and a case of beer surrounded by the canyon cliffs, the indigo mantle of the milky way the only roof over your head.  You can track the album down by clicking the link on the #28 listing.

PARANOID SOGGY Spotlight on:

STONE DAGGER – ‘The Siege of Jerusalem’
Written By Soggy Bob

Stone Dagger...Stone freaking Dagger.

This is some powerful metal from the one and only Brendan Radigan (Magic Circle/Battle Ruins/Mind Eraser...). This is all his doing. He wrote it it. All of it and it's incredible. With the help of studio musicians (Chris Corry and Justin DeTore of Magic Circle) he's put out an amazing two track demo called The Siege of Jerusalem. If you're a fan of Cirith Ungol, Brocas Helm and Manilla Road (like moi) this is right up your alley.

Brendan posted a tune on his FB page and it seemed like it shook the earth. The response from everyone was pretty fantastic. The two tunes are The Siege of Jerusalem and Black Clad Rider. The first track, Siege of Jerusalem starts off with a slow riff before Brendan kicks in with his painfully heartfelt lyric "Father I Pray...". So fucking glorious! The song picks up with some tasty leads and Brendan belting out some catchy hooks. I swear Ive listened to this one song nonstop for at least 2 days. Definitely my favorite song of 2013. Black Clad Rider starts a little quicker with some killer riffs and Radigan singing some very up beat lines leading you into the ultra catchy chorus. After a lead by Chris Corry and more great riffs Brendan is back with that amazing chorus to close the song out. This is one hell of a release. Two amazing tunes by an incredibly talented musician.

According to the Electric Assault Bandcamp page this will be released as a 7" on Feb 18th. Don't be a loser. Bookmark this link and buy it asap. It will sell out in minutes. http://electricassaultrecords.com/

PARANOID Spotlight on:

ARROWHEAD – ‘Atomsmasher’
I don't mean to rake the coals here, but one of the great debates of 2013 was whether or not certain bands had surpassed their aging influences in creative output.  Arrowhead's guitarist (also vocalist) Brett Pearl makes great use of the incredibly warm tones preferred by Josh Homme when he was the guitarist of Kyuss.  With the John Garcia / Brant Bjork led Kyuss revival act Vista Chino also releasing an album just weeks after 'Atomsmasher' it made for an interesting comparison.  However, Arrowhead is so much more than simple Kyuss-worship and this Australian power trio deserves a better fate than being defined by it's guitar tone.

Don't get me wrong, Orange Amps are a big part of Arrowhead's sound, but to me, 'Atomsmasher' is a collection of great riffs and killer hooks.  One of the band's most distinguishing characteristics are Pearl's excellent vocals.  A nearly perfect stoner rock vocal tone with excellent range to tone things down when needed and then spray gasoline on the fire when it's time to up the excitement with a high flying chorus.  "Horse Called Doom" (currently burning up the doom chart: top 25 songs list), "Blood From a Stone", "Diamonds To Dust" and "Eagle Death Machine" are not only some of the catchiest songs you'll hear in the stoner rock genre all year, but they're also an excellent showcase of the band's emphasis on dynamics, that essential element of the classic album.  This one's got it in abundance.  What you get is 10 excellent tracks and 47 minutes of classic stoner rock.  Is it the most original sound?  Can you hear traces and finger prints of Kyuss and Fu Manchu spread throughout the record?  Does it matter when the music is this good?

If you live in Australia you can order the CD through Von Grimm Records right here.  For the rest of us, follow the link at the Arrowhead listing on the chart above (#6), you'll be happy you did.

PARANOID Spotlight on:

SANGOMA - DIVINER
Sangoma is a strange beast.  A proggy, spacey, psychey stoner rock quintet from Huntington, West Virginia, there's something about the different elements all coming together that makes Sangoma sound European.  Or maybe it's more than that.  Maybe it's vocalist Blair Yorke's intrinsic style with his slightly peculiar inflection.  Or maybe it has more to do with the band's iconoclastic music after all.  While there are many divergent genres and subgenres of hard rock and metal, there is an overall American sound, and it's been there for ages.  You can hear it in the frantic pace of Sun Studio's Million Dollar Quartet, the snarling, loose heaviness of the suburban garage bands of the 1960's and in the grooves of most hungry bandcamp bands.  Somehow, there's always seemed to be a bigger emphasis on fine art in the UK and Europe, whereas in the states expression has always been king.  There's a much larger discussion here about the difference between artistic sensibilities and art history, but I won't belabor it.

Sangoma produces fine art.  That's not to say there's no expression here, but when I listen to 'Diviner' there's just something different here.  The songs can be sprawling, but the band still exerts a level of control not often found in American underground bands.  The songs can be aggressive, but aggression is not an end in itself.  There's just more to it than that with this band.  Oddly, a sampling of the band's self-titled debut from June 2012 is a fine example of the 'American sound', heavy, loose, snarling and expressive.  Perhaps the largest difference of all comes from the change in drummer.  The fast and busy Nick Stiles from the first record has been replaced by the more sympathetic Jon Linville for 'Diviner'.  The difference is readily apparent.  While Stiles provided much of the band's propulsion on the first record, that push now seems to come from the rhythm section of Garrett Babb (rhythm guitar) and Josh Harshbarger (bass).  The constant has been the consistent vocals of Yorke and the scorching leads of guitarist Greg Gilbert.

The debut isn't without its memorable moments, but in the end 'Diviner' takes things to another level.  Melody takes hold making songs like "Burnout Blues" and "Consult the Orb" unforgettable.  'Diviner' can be ordered on CD through Sangoma's bandcamp page for a frugal $6 (I got my copy!) or as a digital download for $4.  You can find the page on the link at the #21 spot on the list above.

BLACK MAJIK ACID - SELF-TITLED
Making a return trip to the top albums list this week is Sacremento, California's Black Majik Acid coming in at #23.  Up until recently the project consisted of guitarist/vocalist Sonny Dodds who wrote recorded and played everything on the album himself, but he's recently brought drummer Tyler Gottlob on board and they are set to play their first show January 9, sharing the stage with no less of personages than Blackwitch Pudding in Sacremento.  I caught on to the band when everybody and their cat was sharing the album on facebook a few months ago, unfortunately, due to other commitments, I never quite found the time to really sink my teeth into this thing.  Recently however, I caught wind of the split E.P. Black Majik Acid did with Kansas City experimental weirdos Merlin called 'Sermons of the Dead'.  It was enough of a kick in the ass to remind me to dive into 'Black Majik Acid'.

I'm glad I did.  A loose, lo-fi guitar sound wraps itself around your ears like the crimson bands of Cyttorak.  A warm bluesy feel dominates throughout with an experimental noise rock approach as interpreted by Electric Wizard, especially on the song "Fire Ritual".  'Black Majik Acid' already made my "Rising Albums" list so it's no big shock that it should make a triumphant return to the doom chart albums list, it's just disappointing that I wasted so much time not getting to know it sooner.

Look for the song "High Priestess" on the next Doom Charts songs list this Wednesday, it's the opening track on the album and its opening lick has been caught in my head all week.  After their debut show in January Black Majik Acid will also be supporting Lord Dying on an upcoming show in February.  Things seem to be moving in the right direction for Dodds and co.  The album is up for cheap download on bandcamp right now.  You and your cat should keep spreading it around as much as you can, it's a good one.

PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS - WALK THROUGH EXITS ONLY
Still hanging on at #17 after being some months in the rotation, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals's 'Walk Through Exits Only' is an instant classic.

So where do you even begin talking about it?  Let's just stick to the basics.

Between a successful tour and run of highly publicized shows on the festival circuit with his other band Down and a horror / metal festival in Austin this past Halloween it's fair to say that Phil Anselmo is enjoying a career resurgence the likes of which he hasn't seen since his days as vocalist for chart-topping groove metal act Pantera.  2013 also saw the debut of Phil Anselmo, solo artist.  It's a safe assumption that his solo efforts took most observers by surprise with their ferocity, stripped down honesty and most of all by their quality.  The first time hearing the song "Conflict" from the split E.P. he and the Illegals did with Warbeast for example is like stepping on a rake.  Whack!

On '... Exits Only' Anselmo takes any expectations you might have had and crumples them into a tight little ball, then uncrumples them, lays them out flat and sets to work on them with a pair of scissors.  Then crumples the pieces up once again and eats them in a display of witty, apeshit fury.

'Walk Through Exits Only' is a bit of a grower, but even on first listen it's obvious that this is a game-changing metal album.  Once it does find its footing and you find yourself unable to shake some of the lines and choruses from your head, it's basically impossible to exorcise from your mind completely.  Clever catchiness and uncompromising heaviness push aggressive tendencies to the forefront from the word go.  This album will take your lunch money over and over and over again.

PARANOID Spotlight on:

ARGUS - BEYOND THE MARTYRS
Coming in at #21 on this week's list, Argus's third and latest full-length album 'Beyond the Martyrs', released October 4 on Cruz Del Sur Music, has made a ferocious comeback in my daily listening habits.  Formed in 2005 by guitarists Jason Mucio & Mike Wisniewski, bassist Jason Viele and drummer Kevin Latchaw the band changed bass guitarists, adding Andy Ramage to pull up the low-end and inserting the immaculate Butch Balich on vocals before releasing their first demo in 2007.  The band then replaced Wisniewski with Erik Johnson on second guitar.  I hopped on the Argus train at a much later stop, about a year and a half after the release of the incredible and excellently titled 'Boldly Stride the Doomed'.  Actually, I can thank Soggy Bob and his Soggy Bog of Doom podcast for that, when I heard the band on his traditional doom special (still a seminal episode in my personal doomed stridings).  Anyway, I was completely blown away by the record, by the power the band wields and by the confident strength inherent in Balich's anthemic vocals, which comes across particularly well on my favorite song from the album, "The Ladder".

So it all goes without saying that expectations of 'Beyond the Martyrs' were high, incredibly high, perhaps even impossibly high here in the Paranoid Bunker and alas 'Beyond the Martyrs' did not meet them upon my first few listens.  But I couldn't give up on this band or this album, I kept the album on the back burner on low heat for the better part of two and a half months, lifting the lid on it every now and then, checking to make sure I wasn't too impatient with it.  But of course, I was.

You see, paranoia can come in handy and it was that low paranoid throb at the base of my skull which told me that I was missing out on something great here.

Sometimes, you can't be paranoid enough.

In the end 'Beyond the Martyrs' is a worthy follow-up to 'Boldly Stride the Doomed'.  Opening track "By Endurance We Conquer" is perhaps the best song I've heard from the band yet with Balich's confident strength once again shining through with excellent storytelling that can't fail to pump you up, it's currently riding high in the doom chart's top 25 songs list and will remain a highlight of metal for as long as man endures.  "Trinity" is another standout track touching on Vedic themes in suitably epic fashion.  Drummer Kevin Latchaw deserves to be singled out as well for another excellent performance, perforating the band's guitar heavy attack with double kick when needed and for providing large dollops of drive throughout while guitarist Mucio's solos continue to be a source of inspiration.

This album is recommended for all fans of traditional and/or epic doom and you can find it by clicking through the link at the listing above (the same can be said for all the albums on this list, naturally) and you can also find it on itunes.
