NEWS: SATELLITE BEAVER CHANGE BANDNAME AND REVEAL FIRST DETAILS OF THEIR UPCOMING ALBUM!

2012 was a seminal year for me.  It's the year I tumbled down the rabbit hole of underground heavy and there's been no looking back.  One of my favorite releases from that year was 'The Last Bow' 4-song E.P. by a Polish band called Satellite Beaver.  Recently the band announced on their facebook page that they have changed their name to Sunnata, but have kept the same personnel, etc.  The name is a Buddhist word and means "emptiness" or more accurately "voidness".  I've kept up with the band and over the course of the last year or so the band has released a couple live performance videos of new songs.  The songs are heavier, thicker, more psychedelic and the change in name is fitting.  Read the press release below for more details:

Warsaw doomsters SATELLITE BEAVER announced that they have changed their name for good. After much deliberation and discussion, they have decided to move on as SUNNATA! As Satellite Beaver, they released three EPs and played some of the biggest central and eastern-european stoner festivals, including Desertfest Berlin, Days Of The Ceremony (PL) or Robustfest (UA), and shared the stages with acts such as Sungrazer, Karma To Burn or Suma.

"Many things have changed since our start in 2008. After three short-length releases and numerous shows we all (finally) agreed to make a step closer to become premium pop-stars. However, the new band name doesn’t imply any line-up or make-up changes. It simply suits our approach to the music, which has become way heavier and trippy in comparison to what we played back in 2008. So here it is." – says drummer Rob.

Along with their name change, SUNNATA have also revealed first details of their upcoming full-length album titled CLIMBING THE COLOSSUS. The album is already in the mix and will contain 7 tracks filled with noise, fuzz and downtuned trips. The upcoming long-awaited record by Sunnata is scheduled to be released in March 2014 and a first single will be coming out soon!

2012 Chronicle (Year in review) part 5 - Best of May

May 1 - Buffalo Theory MTL (Heavy Ride)

May 1 - The Heavy Eyes (2)

May 1 - SNAIL (Terminus) - Highly melodic, hypnotizing and harmonized, Snail's third full-length and second since reforming in 2008 was one of the best in the stoner rock genre.  It was also one of the most addictive albums of the year, something I went back to constantly.  Download it on the cheap on bandcamp  Highlights include "Ritual" and "Galaxies' Lament".  Rating 4/5

May 1 - Sun Preachers (Faces of Ashes)

May 1 - Whitey (Bostonia)

May 4 - Abyss (ST EP)

May 5 - STEAK (Disastronaught) - I talk about Steak a lot on this blog and for good reason: they're really freaking good.  I geeked out the first time I heard "The Butcher".  It was the perfect thing to throw on during scorching hot afternoons while looking for trouble.  It turns out there's no fooling around with this band however, this is thinking man's music with a storyline that runs throughout the five song EP chronicling the rise and fall of evil space emperor Lazarus.  Can't wait to hear their next effort this upcoming April.  Get Disastronaught here.  Highlights include "The Butcher" and "Machine".  Rating 4.5/5

May 7 - Black Moth (Killing Jar)

May 8 - Horseback (Half Blood)

May 8 - Von Thundersvolt (Demo)

May 10 - The Mermaids of the Lipetsk Shed (Oversea)

May 10 - SATELLITE BEAVER (The Last Bow) - I was so blown away by this 4 song EP that I'm only now beginning to recover.  The things this Polish quartet are able to do in 18 minutes is staggering.  "Roadtrip" contains four distinct parts and none of them repeat.  I still can't get over it.  Multi-tracked vocals give this an Alice in Chains feel, while the tone or vocal quality is more akin to Marilyn Manson.  The playing is something to behold as well, the guitars are like a tornado of distortion and fury.  Each song sounds like a chaotic riot until you realize the band are the masters and in complete control.  Find it here.  Highlights include "Roadtrip" and "Perishing".  Rating 5/5

May 15 - Pantera (Vulgar Display of Power re-issue)

May 15 - TOMBSTONE (Devil's Ride Demo) - This French trio isn't necessarily doing anything brand new, but when the band has such a knack for churning out great fuzzy doom riffs under the aegis of Sleep, they don't need to.  They have a new album coming soon.  Download the Devil's Ride EP for free here. Highlights include "Devil's Ride" and "Watch Me Bleed".  Rating 4.5/5

May 23 - Jess & the Ancient Ones (ST)

May 24 - UNMOTHERED (ST) - Normally I stay clear of black metal but the Austin Texas based 'innovators of haunt rock' hit the right spot.  What is 'haunt rock'?  Blackened atmospheric sludge metal?  You be the judge.  The band features Matt Moulis of the Hidden Hand on drums.  This album is well worth checking out.  Find it here.  Highlights include "Spectre" and "Gravitons".  Rating 4/5

May 25 - AHAB (The Giant) - Ahab's brand of nautically themed doom is epic and daunting like the ocean itself.  There's nothing really catchy here, but that's not the point.  'The Giant' was a colossal success in terms of vision and execution.  It's an experience unto itself.  And the CD booklet is full of great art, no kidding, you should check it out.  Highlights include "The Giant" and "Aeons Elapse".  Rating 3.5/5

May 25 - DSW (Dust Storm Warning) - First off, check out my review of DSW's 'Dust Storm Warning' here if you haven't already.  This was one of my favorites of the year.  Another one I can't stop talking about.  This was one of the purest and most sophisticated desert rock albums to come out in 2012.  Grab it here.  Highlights include "Outrun" and "Space Cubeship".  Rating 4/5

May 26 - WITCH MOUNTAIN (Cauldron of the Wild) - Critical darlings, Witch Mountain's third full-length album and second since their return in 2005 was a highly memorable slice of slow and punishing doom.  Vocalist Uta Plotkin of course is the star of the show and it's her huge voice belting out that is the most memorable aspect of this album.  Highlights include "Beekeeper" and "Veil of the Forgotten".  Rating 3.5/5

May 28 - Open Tomb (ST)

May 29 - Cortez (ST)

May 29 - DARK EARTH (42012) - Dark Earth are a bay area three piece that plays a thrashy style of stoner doom metal.  Their song "Evil King" is one of the catchiest songs I've heard all year, it's still in my head.  The rest of the album is pretty special, too.  Available for free download on bandcamp, don't miss it!  Highlights include "Evil King" and "Dark Earth".  Rating 4/5

May 31 - FROM BEYOND (One Year EP) - Houston Texas based trio From Beyond unleashed their debut four song EP on an unsuspecting world and the world has been a darker, doomier place ever since.  Four songs that are each memorable, they each carry their own weight and each were big hits in the Doom Charts this summer.  I listened to "Evil" for the first time wondering why the hell this wasn't the kind of thing I hear on the radio.  It's a great song with a lot of classic elements of commercial success.  Then I realized, this band is only getting started.  Get in on the ground floor here.  Highlights include "Evil (From Beyond)" and "One Year".  Rating 5/5

Weekly Mailbag for 12/03/12 - 12/07/12

A look at what came in the mail this week with quickie reviews ...

I took advantage recently of the All That Is Heavy sale (still going) by ordering all three Truckfighters albums and two by Electric Wizard.  Well, all five albums arrived as a single package and it was overwhelming.  Instead of burning through a band's entire discography in a single afternoon, I like to take things a bit slower and listen to one album at a time, and live with it for at least a week (which still isn't as much time as I should take but I'm impatient), preferably in chronological order to hear the growth / development of a band, etc.  So I'm thinking I'll spread this out over the next couple 'Mail Bags'.  The package also came with a very nice handwritten note.  I love that kind of stuff.

Blue Cheer - Outsideinside - First heard this album about 7 years ago and I always loved it.  Featuring more structured songwriting and less improvisation than their first album, this is a more focused record.  Unfortunately this is probably where my Blue Cheer collection ends because everything after this album hasn't been re-issued in years and is now way too expensive on Amazon.  Most frightening of all is it's beginning to look the same way for Hawkwind as well.  Highlights include "Come and Get It" and "The Hunter". Rating - 4/5

Electric Wizard - Let Us Prey - Their fourth album and follow up to career highlight 'Dopethrone', this one actually sounds like it could have been released between their self-titled debut and 'Come My Fanatics ...'.  As a follow up to a classic, it's a bit disappointing and is shorter than most Electric Wizard albums but it still features some heavy ass riffage and some prominent drumming not usually found on Electric Wizard releases.  Taken as its own entity and not as part of a larger story it's a very good album.  It was also the last album by the original lineup of the band.  Highlights include "The Outsider" and "We, The Undead". Rating - 4/5

Hawkwind - Hall of the Mountain Grill - I always liked the song "The Psychedelic Warlords (Disappear in Smoke)".  Just the title gives me that warm fuzzy feeling.  This is the first time I've actually listened to the whole album, including "Lost Johnny" which is weird to hear such a punky song (when done by Motorhead) be given such a spaced out treatment. This is Hawkwind at their spaceyest yet, it's laid back and very phantasmic / ethereal in sound overall.  Again, compare this and Motorhead's "Lost Johnny" and it's clear what Hawkwind was going for throughout this album.  Highlights include "The Psychedelic Warlords (Disappear in Smoke)" and "D-Riders". Rating - 4/5

Orcus Chylde - ST - It took me forever to track this down, ultimately I caved and went through Amazon.  Well, finally it came.  This album has the same kind of vibe to it as Graveyard's latest, a laid back retro rock album with many folky elements.  They are the mellow sonic cousins of Kadavar.  I don't imagine this album will appeal to many metal people out there, but it makes for a nice change of pace.  Highlights include "Orcus Chylde" and "The Day The Seventh Angel Came". Rating - 3.5/5

Red Desert - Damned By Fate - I got to admit, I didn't like this album the first time I heard it.  I definitely judged the book by its cover and I was expecting something real doomy.  I mean, look at it.  The cover just screams 'devil's third'.  What you get is 9 tracks of heavy, melodic rock and roll, but not the doom metal in the Electric Wizard vein I was expecting.  After a couple weeks I decided to give it another spin, this time knowing what to expect and having adjusted my expectations it became one of my top 10 favorites of the year.  Highlights include "Devils Curse" and "Lust Queen". Rating - 4.5/5

Satellite Beaver - The Last Bow - I freaked out about this EP when it first came out on Bandcamp.  This was one of the real highlights of summer.  Multi-tracked vocals create Alice in Chains like harmonies with a Marilyn Manson tone, the music itself is a real work of art, especially the track "Roadtrip".  A 5:23 journey through 4 movements and no repeating parts!?!  "Pershing" is a four minute blast of redlining fury and a swell introduction to the band.  At 18 minutes overall, I just kept coming back, listening to it on my break at work, etc.  Damn, I was excited to see this come in the mail.  Get it here.  Highlights include "Roadtrip" and "Pershing". Rating - 5/5

Thin Lizzy - Shades of a Blue Orphanage - Thin Lizzy is wonderfully predictable.  You know what to expect: half ballads / half boogie barnburners.  The quality of each song, be it one or the other style, is upped considerably on their second album.  "Baby Face", "Brought Down", "Call the Police" and "The Rise and Dear Demise of the Funky Nomadic Tribes" all satisfy the funk craving, while "Chatting Today" is a terrific song, even though it is a slow one.  "Buffalo Gal" is simply one of the best ballads ever recorded.  A wonderful song, with great lyrics to boot.  This CD also has "Whiskey in the Jar" as a bonus track.   Highlights include "Call the Police" and "Buffalo Gal". Rating - 4.5/5

Truckfighters - Gravity X - I watched Häxan the classic Swedish study of witchcraft as I listened to this, "probably the best band in the world"s debut album.  It was a good move.  The imagery of the film, combined with the fuzz groove went well together.  Truckfighters pull out all the stops here: horns, harmony, and a heaping helping of styles.  At 67 minutes it's a sprawling debut with tons of ideas, but ultimately what the band is known for are their big funky fuzz outs and those are the moments, peppered throughout the album, that really stand out. Highlights include "Freewheelin" and "The Deal". Rating - 4.5/5
